A Royal Mistress

These superb pearl earrings, that were recently auctioned for 1.6 million pounds, belonged once to Elena Lupesco, mistress to the king Carol II of Romania.  For her he abdicated his rights to the succession to the Romanian throne, as well as his membership in the royal family ; he accepted a divorce from his legitimate spouse ; and left Romania and eventually married the love of his life.

Witty and outspoken Elena (aka Magda) Lupesco,  was a  fashion icon who influenced the way Romanian women used make up, nail polish and lipstick.
