“Your dresses should be tight enough to
show you're a woman & loose enough to show you're a lady.” – said Edith
Head, the celebrated designer who collaborated with Hitchcock on eleven movies
and created Kim Novak’s famous grey suit she wears in Vertigo.
Vertigo is one of my favorite movies, if
not my favorite because of the mysterious and romantic atmosphere that emanates from Madeleine, this singular character.
The suit itself was, according to Novak
very stiff forcing her to stand erect and hold her shoulders back. The result
however is of vulnerability and lightness, also stressed by her simple but elegant hairdo. It was Hitchcock
who insisted in having her wear a grey suit, black shoes and gloves, and so
creating a distinguished and feminine character. As always he knew exactly what
he wanted.
I tried, rather unsuccessfully, to
re-create the grey suit from images of the web.
